Project Description
UNAPROA´s main objective is to encourage people to be aware
of their duty to the environment and to promote subsistence farming
in the Brunca region. Illegal clearing of large forested areas endorsed
by large landowners and lumber industries is endangering ecosystems
and destroying the livelihood of subsistence farmers. Widespread
use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides by multinational companies
growing pineapples and coffee in the area is a great threat to the
land and those who work on it.
The aims of the UNAPROA programs are:
-
to strengthen the methods of subsistence agriculture used
by the poor farmers and indigenous populations in the region.
-
to find new ways to increase the incomes of the local people
and to help realize these ideas.
-
to increase awareness of the importance of questioning and
informing oneself about environmental issues, especially among
children and teenagers.
-
to support the laws which protect the rainforest and ensure
that they are followed.
UNAPROA has been influencing the region by setting a positive example
and showing how environmental problems can be solved by the people
themselves. The organization has therefore become a part of the
economic and social development of the country.
