Percussion workshop in Cocorì
The percusion workshop has started in january 2007, in the district of Cocori, city of San Isidro De El General. Before that, the association Vida Nueva had been present in this district through the workshops of Matthias and Matthias, who runned some workshops of football and artcraft. Alexandra and Lena also used to be there episodically. But when the two Matthias left Costa Rica, nobody could keep on animating their workshops. Vida Nueva disappeared from Cocori for a few monthes – at the regret of the kids, who were missing the presence of the volunteers – until the point when Marlon started to run a Taek Won Do club there, re-implanting the presence of the association.

The district of Cocori is one of the districts with the hugest needs in matter of social action: the poverty level and the drugs problems are both high. Furthermore, in this district, the biggest trailer trash of the area is located. Many kids do work there, picking up metal to sell it for a couple of colones. Those boys and girls all show much energy and a great creativity. So, the needs for social action are enormous in that district. |
| Basically, the workshop aimed to teach how to play music, to the kids from the district between 9 and 14 years old. The workshop took place at the football ground, 2 or 3 times a week. The instruments were provided by the volunteers from Vida Nueva, which has some musicians. At the end, it has be possible to collect a nice collection: 3 djembes, 1 derbuka, a bombo (made from a plastic box from the trailer trash), a “pandereta”, some eggs, a “Tok-tok”, 2 “claves”, an harmonica and a whistle, for a total of 10 instruments. The size of the group vary, depending on the days: as a maximum, some 20 kids had been playing in the whole afternoon. The most assiduated kids are a group of ten. |

The learning method focused on the participation of each one to a group, the combination of individualities, and the fundamental fact that without the others, you can’t do anything with your drum. The kids learn that without the group, there is no drummer, whereas in the group, they all exist.
The artistic expression also help to strenghten the self esteem of the kids.
The workshop had been animated by Matthieu and Jorge, from january 2007 to february 2007, and then by Matthieu until april 2007. But among them, a few “featurings” occured, as some musician friends attracted by the band of Cocori: Dario, Nils, Santiago, Tobias, Carolina, Jueves, Victor, Celine... |
Right now, the workshop is missing a volunteer to run it... So it is hibernating! Until one volunteer is motivated by Cocori and awaken it.
