Project to paint the school
In the middle of March, Josephina Dallaire, a Canadian arts teacher,
initiated a project to paint a map of the world on the wall of the
school in Longo Mai. To start with, some volunteers painted the
outlines of countries and then the children searched on a map to
find the corresponding countries, which they then painted, each
in a different colour. Many of the children were surprised about
the small size of Costa Rica as compared to other countries. Until
then, many did not now exactly what the world looks like. This project
was the idea of the school’s head teacher, Alvan Esquivela
Urbina. His idea was to teach children geography in a fun way. Although
this subject is part of the curriculum, the children only learn
a little about the continents, the biggest countries and typical
animals. Hence it was thought that the map could be used for geography
lessons as well as the children learning simply by looking, as they
pass by the map every day.
