Biocorridor

The Biocorridor is an area of forest area made up of 20 ha of secondary forest which is home to a rich diversity of species. Property of the neighbouring Montealgre family, this land forms a vital link between two of the Finca's most protected forest areas. Without such a link, many species would become isolated and therefore experience a reduction in genepool diversity. For these reasons Longo Mai is hoping to buy the Biocorridor land.

The rich species diversity supported by this ecosystem includes two groups of capuchin monkeys, sloths, giant anteaters, agoutis, pacas, armadillos and a great variety of birds, frogs and insects. Although very rarely, cats such as the ocelot and jaguar have been spotted while descending from the mountains in order to hunt in the lowlands. The protected area is also crossed by many rivers and streams.

A system of small trails makes it possible to discover the region, and biologists, botanists and scientists have recently begun conducting research within its boundaries. For example, one the last Chiricano trees (Vantanea barbourii-Hhumiriacea) has been found on Longo Mai's land. Before this discovery it was impossible to plant this tree in nurseries.

In the year 2000 Longo Mai began a campaign to preserve this forest area. We have been buying up the land little by little, according to a contract with the owner. One hectare (10 000 m) costs about $2000 US, while every square metre costs only 50 cents.
Any person, group, or school can be part of this program. Presently a campaign consisting of speeches and the collection of donations is taking place in various German schools, and has allowed Longo Mai to buy up 2 hectares. All those who participate will recieve a certificate thanking them for their donation.
