Women's Group

For the women of Longo Mai it is very difficult to earn money. The only activity that earns them money is coffee harvests. For this reason, in November 2003, a women’s group was founded, similar to those in neighbouring villages. Nine women of all ages meet once a week to plan activities together. They have started to sow plants such as aloe, sage, juanilama, lemons, oregano, elder, dill, cotton and mint amongst others, to produce cosmetics such as shampoo, soap and creams. The idea is for the women themselves to use these products (cosmetics usually contain many chemicals) and to sell them in the village to tourists and local inhabitants.

In order to finance their activities the group organise events such as dances and showing films. The money that they earn will be used to buy necessary materials. In the future they would like to build a house, in which they can meet. In addition, the women produce artesanía (handicrafts), which they also sell in the village. Some members of the group are attending a course in artesanía in San Isidro to learn new techniques. One of the techniques they are learning is to recycle rubbish by using it in the production of artesanía and furniture. For example, converting empty plastic bottles into original, comfortable and practical chairs. The course also provides the opportunity to meet other groups of women from San Isidro and other places.
