Construction of Cabins

For the inhabitants of Longo Mai, offering lodging to tourists is one of the few opportunities to earn money; for single mothers in particular, building cabinas is a great financial help. One such project was completed this year with the help of the “Zivis” (Austrian men completing their civil service) and the construction was funded by donations from Austria and other European countries. By April 2004, the cabinas built next to Dona Virginia’s house (a widow with 9 children) were ready for use and already have been used by several tourists. This project served as a model for a new building project at Dona Felicia’s house, this second project being made possible by donations from Austria and Switzerland. The role of the Zivis in Longo Mai is to administer donations, estimate costs, buy materials, contract the personnel and be involved in the construction of the cabinas.
