UAS - Universidad Alternativa del Sur

The teachers Eduardo Saxe and Juan Gomez have developed a project connected to the extension of Longo Mai. This project tried to found an alternative university on the land of Longo Mai. Eduardo Saxe, a Professor of History and Sociology at the Universidad Nacional de Heredia, describes the function as follows: the UAS (Universidad Alternativa del Sur) is a “university” with a vision, universal reach and multi-disciplinary approach. The alternative character and direction continue to be based on the needs and customs of the people of the south of Costa Rica. The UAS looks to develop solutions and thoughts directed at promoting the communal life, creative peaceful, humanist and compassionate. It has regional projects in San Isidro del General, Buenos Aires, Osa and Coto Brus de Puntarenas. Furthermore it has an important international approach. In the academic scope of the programs it addresses the problems of organization, education, production, communication and ideology of the participating communities. Initially the teachers will be composed of recently retired academics or recently graduated teachers. It is conceived and run according to criteria that promote humanity and the plenty of nature.

It is located in 7 hectares of land in Longo Mai. Even if setting up the infrastructure requires more time it is possible to see already the results of the first activities in coillaboration with UNA/Sede Pérez Zeledón.
